Cuba national film institute ICAIC is producing and coordinating a first-ever Cuban Women Filmmakers Showcase in three U.S. cities this month — Los Angeles (March 6-12), New York (March 13-17) and Miami (March 18-25) — in conjunction with Women in Film, AMPAS and other orgs.
Marina Ochoa, who heads the Cuban Women Filmmakers Mediatheque, and is among the four Cuban talents featured in the tri-city showcase, says that given ICAIC’s limited resources in a male-dominated industry, Cuba’s women filmmakers disproportionately struggle for recognition. Others in the showcase are Afro-Cuban docu filmmaker Gloria Rolando, helmer Milena Almira and thesp Claudia Rojas.
Honorary hosts of the event include Annette Bening, Laura Bickford, Jackson Browne, Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, Susan Sarandon, Rick Nicita and Paula Wagner.
“Creating this showcase allows for the exploration and expression of multicultural viewpoints,” says WIF Intl. Committee co-chair Ruby Lopez.
