Swipe Nicks Sales Rights to Chilean ‘Sisters’ at Venice Film Festival

Frank Mannion’s Swipe Films has inked world sales rights to Chilean Sebastian Sepulveda’s “The Quispe Sisters,” which world premieres today at Venice’s 28th Critics’ Week.

A U.K.-based production-distribution-sales house, Swipe is closing a French distribution deal. Buyers are hovering over U.S.-Latin American rights, Swipe founder Frank Mannion said.

Written by Sepulveda (“Young and Wild”) “Quispe” is produced by Pablo and Juan de Dios Larrain’s Fabula.

It stars Catalina Saavedra (“The Maid”) and Fernanda Gavilan (“Violeta Went to Heaven”). Sepulveda shot his fiction feature at over 10,000 feet — where sisters struggle as goatherds under Pinochet’s dictatorship..

In visual terms, “Quispe” attempts to describe the world from the p.o.v. of the goatherds, creating an almost hypnotic style, Sepulveda told Variety.

“Quispe” won the Churubusco Prize for co-production project at Mexico’s 2011 Guadalajara Festival.

“With Latin American or indeed any foreign language films, audiences want to see slice-of-life from places they don’t know,” Mannion said.

“Though not a political film, this is an interesting new perspective on Pinochet’s Chile, and Latin America is a very stable growth market,” he said.
