‘Heirs,’ ‘Streets’ ‘Wind’ to Feature at Cannes’ Atelier

Fest's co-production workshop includes 15 projects

Mexican Jorge Hernandez Aldana’s “The Heirs,” Egyptian Revolution portrait “Out/In the Streets” and Ozcan Alper’s “Memories of the Wind” are among 15 projects selected for the Cannes Film Festival’s 9th Cinefondation Atelier, one of Europe’s highest-profile talent hubs.

A forum for projects seeking completion finance, often via international co-production, the Atelier unspools during May’s Cannes fest.

“The Heirs” is a coming-of-age tale set in mid-’90s Monterrey from the director of “The Night Buffalo,” set up at Lucia Films, the new shingle of helmer-producer Michel Franco (“After Lucia”).

“Out/In the Streets” is helmed by Egypt’s Philip Rizk and Jasmina Metwaly, who mix fiction and documentary to narrate the country’s revolution from its participants p.o.v.

Alper’s third feature, adventure-love story “Memories of the Wind,” turns on a young Armenian poet on the run in 1943 from Nazi-backed Turkish authorities.

It will also showcase “Road Kill” from New York-based Japanese cineaste-photographer Yuichi Hibi.

Indian Manjeet Singh will pitch “Chenu,” about an under-privileged Dalit boy in the Ganges River region. Singh’s debut, “Mumbai ka raja,” bowed in Toronto’s City to City program.

“Me, Myself and Murdoch,” by Jordanian Yahya Abdullah, won a $25,000 grant at the 2012 Dubai Film Connection.

The Atelier will also deliver Israeli pics, “The House on Fin Street” and “Holy Air,” the sophomore features of Amir Manor and Shady Srour, respectively. Manor’s debut, “Epilogue,” bowed at Venice Days last year.

Atelier projects are rounded out by Ethiopian Yared Zeleke’s “Lamb”; Laura Bispuri’s “Sworn Virgin,” produced by Alessandro Usai; Thelma Films-produced “Je ne suis pas un salaud,” directed by Gaul’s Emmanuel Finkiel, whose debut “Voyages” won a Cannes nod and two Cesars; Chilean Niles Atallah’s “Rey,” an 1860-set portrait of a French lawyer who offered to make native leaders King of Patagonia; “Ciao ciao,” from China’s Chuan Song, about a rebellious woman sent back to her parents’ village in disgrace.

Greek Yorgos Zois will pitch his first feature, “Stage Fright,” while South Africa’s Teboho Joscha Edkins presents “Days of Cannibalism.”
