Folman's 'The Congress' open Directors' Fortnight

PARIS — Ari Folman’s sci-fi drama “The Congress,” his follow-up to “Waltz With Bashir,” will kick off Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes on May 16.

A hybrid feature mixing live-action and animation, “Congress” stars an actress (Robin Wright) who takes part in an experiment that will help boost her career, but there is a price to be paid. The pic is based on Stanislaw Lem’s “The Futurological Congress.”

The cast also includes Harvey Keitel, Paul Giamatti and Jon Hamm.

The full Directors’ Fortnight selection will be unveiled on Tuesday by artistic topper Edouard Waintrop.

“‘The Congress’ looks at our future and that of the cinema. In this powerful adaptation of Stanislaw Lem’s cult novel, Ari Folman gives free rein to his imagination… It will open the 2013 Directors’ Fortnight, which in fact deals with the future of the movies around the world,” Waintrop said.
