Universal Crosses $2 billion For the First Time at Overseas Box Office

'Fast and Furious 6,' 'Despicable Me 2' lead for the studio internationally

Thanks to a diverse first-quarter and summer slate, Universal Pictures crossed the $2 billion mark at the international box office for the first time in the studio’s 101-year history.

Universal’s top-grossing pic so far this year overseas, “Fast and Furious 6,” earned a whopping $549.3 million, followed by “Despicable Me 2,” which collected north of $485 million internationally. The studio’s 2012 Christmas release, “Les Miserables,” earned $293 million total overseas, of which $239 million came this year.

The studio milestone comes in spite of U’s recent exec shake-up, which saw chairman Adam Fogelson booted for Jeff Shell, who formerly ran NBCUniversal Intl.

Fast and Furious 6” is U’s second-highest grossing film ever, behind “Jurassic Park,” which also helped boost the studio’s 2013 overseas market share, with a 3D re-release that has totaled $71 million offshore this year. In its lifetime, “Jurassic Park” has grossed more than $675 million internationally.

Other 2013 Universal releases include Tom Cruise sci-fier “Oblivion,” which grossed $197 million this year, and first-quarter scarer “Mama,” with $76 million overseas.

Up next for the studio, Richard Curtis’ romantic comedy “About Time” — which so far has grossed $6 million in the U.K. — continues to roll out overseas, followed by Keanu Reeves action-epic “47 Ronin” and Martin Scorsese’s “Wolf of Wall Street,” which U will distribute this year in 11 overseas territories.
