Having already become Quentin Tarantino’s highest-grossing Stateside release (surpassing 2009’s “Inglourious Basterds”), “Django Unchained” broke loose internationally, scoring a chart-topping $49.1 million debut from 54 foreign markets.
“Django,” which Sony is releasing internationally, outpaced “Basterds” by 30% over the same period from the same posse of territories, and opened as the top film in 23 of those, including Germany and France, which contributed $9.6 million and $7.3 million, respectively.
Russia was one of the few markets where the pic didn’t debut at No. 1, earning $5.4 million to place it behind Paramount’s early bow of “Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters,” which found $7.3 million, 98% from 3D.
“Django,” which received five Oscar nominations including best picture, has grossed north of $140 million and counting domestically (where it’s distribbed by the Weinstein Co.) — $20 million more than what “Basterds” earned Stateside. That earlier pic wound up making more than $200 million internationally, a reasonable bar for “Django” given the film’s overseas start and recent B.O. growth.
While “Django” has just begun its overseas rollout, another Sony-distributed title, “Skyfall,” has started its final international push in China, grossing $5.1 million Jan. 21 on a record-setting 8,079 screens. The Bondpic’s Chinese opening day tracked 14% ahead of “The Dark Knight Rises,” which also bowed on a Monday last summer.
“Skyfall” ranks 11th worldwide all-time, with $1.041 billion, of which international plexes have contributed more than $740 million (71%). The film should crack the top 10 after the total China take is tallied.
