'Fast and Furious 6' to take first with worse-than-expected $35 million

Pre-weekend tracking appears to have been off this weekend as Sony’s “After Earth” underperforms and Summit’s “Now You See Me” overperforms to meet in the middle at an anticipated sum just less than $30 million this weekend.

After taking second in the domestic marketplace Friday, “Now You See Me” is expected to close the frame in second with about $27 million, spectacularly beating earlier projections that had the pic in the mid-to-high teens.

Conversely, “After Earth,” which was projected to earn between $35 million and $40 million, is right on “Now You See Me’s” heels. Pics earned $9.8 million and about $10.1 million Friday, respectively.

Universal’s “Fast and Furious 6” is easily retaining the top spot in its soph sesh, though not with the margin of victory  expected a few days ago. A total near $50 million has been scaled back to $35 million — a 65% week-over-week drop — after Friday’s $10.5 million haul, barely ahead of the frame’s openers.

In limited release, CBS Films bowed “The Kings of Summer” and Fox Searchlight bowed “The East” both on four screens this frame. They enjoyed per screen averages of $4,443 and $4,875 Friday, respectively.
