With strong overseas bow, 'Oblivion' should cross $100 million worldwide this weekend

Tom Cruise-starrer “Oblivion” bowed Stateside Friday to $$13.3 million, dialing up predictions that had it in the low- or -mid-$30 million range to a weekend haul closer to $38 million.

Universal’s sci-fi actioner opened abroad last week to nearly twice that, $60.4 million, which means “Oblivion” will pass the $100 million marker worldwide before Monday, a strong start for a film that cost a reported $120 million to make.

“Oblivion” needed a strong start as Disney’s “Iron Man 3” is hot on its heels with a May 3 domestic berth and an April 26 int’l one.

As the only wide opener this frame, U’s entry wreaked havoc on the competition. Holdover “42” from Warner Bros.-Legendary earned $5.2 million Friday headed for a soph sesh in its high teens. “42” has cumed $41.2 million in 10 days.

Behind that, Fox-DreamWorks Animations’ “The Croods” made $2.2 million, and Weinstein Co.’s “Scary Movie 5” earned $2.1 million.

Focus expanded “The Place Beyond the Pines” Friday to about $1.4 million and sixth place. The drama, which had a strong start in three weeks in limited release, will likely make just over $4 million this frame.
