Finland Selects 'Disciple' Oscar Candidate

Pic will open in Finland on Sept. 27

Ulrika Bengts’ “The Disciple” (Larjungen) has been selected to rep Finland in the foreign-language film Oscar race.

Pic, which is produced by Mats Langbacka for Langfilm Productions, stars Erik Lonngren, Patrik Kumpulainen, Niklas Groundstroem, Amanda Ooms, Ping Mon Wallen, Philip Zanden and Sampo Sarkola.

Penned by Jimmy Karlsson and Roland Fauser, the 1939-set drama centers on the friendship and rivalry between two teenage boys living on an isolated island in the Baltic Sea.

The film will be released in Finland by Langfilm Production on Sept. 27. It world-preemed at Montreal fest, which wrapped today.

“‘The Disciple’ is a simple but bright pearl,” stated the Finnish selection committee, which comprised film professionals. “The film’s universal story and high quality production impressed the jury.”
