Kudos is given to talent who shine international spotlight on U.K.

LONDON — Helmer Paul Greengrass is to receive the Variety Award at the Moët British Independent Film Awards on Dec. 8, it was announced Monday.

The award recognizes a director, actor, writer or producer who has helped to shine the international spotlight on the U.K. Jude Law received the award last year, and it has been given in past years to Kenneth Branagh, Liam Neeson, Michael Caine, Daniel Craig and Helen Mirren, among others.

Among the kudos Greengrass has earned during his career was the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival for “Bloody Sunday,” and an Academy Award nomination for “United 93.” Greengrass also directed blockbusters like “The Bourne Supremacy” and “The Bourne Ultimatum.”

His latest film, “Captain Phillips,” has been a critical success, and is a front runner in the awards season.
