Benedict Cumberbatch to Receive Britannia Award

BAFTA/LA to bestow British Arts of the Year prize on Actor

BAFTA Los Angeles will honor Benedict Cumberbatch at the 2013  Britannia Awards Nov. 9 at the Beverly Hilton.

Cumberbatch, who stars in Toronto opener “The Fifth Estate,” will receive the British Artist of the Year kudo. Previously announced honorees include George Clooney, who will be awarded the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film; Kathryn Bigelow, who will receive the John Schlesinger Britannia Award for Excellence in Directing; and Ben Kingsley, whom BAFTA/LA has chosen for the Albert R. Broccoli prize. BAFTA will continue to announce additional honorees as the kudofest approaches.

2013 has been a blockbuster year for Cumberbatch, who stars in three pics drawing early Oscar buzz, “The Fifth Estate,” “August: Osage County” and “12 Years a Slave.”

Prior Blighty natives to earn the artist of the year honor include Daniel Craig, Kate Winslet, Tilda Swinton, Helena Bonham Carter, Emily Blunt, Rachel Weisz and Michael Sheen.

BBC America will air the awards ceremony on Nov. 10.
