Gaul makes Indian filmmaker Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters

The French government will bestow its prestigious Chevalier dans l’ordre des Arts et Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) honor on Indian filmmaker Anurag Kashyap on Monday in Cannes.

Kashyap, whose “Ugly” (pictured) preems today in Directors’ Fortnight, will receive the honor from culture minister Aurelie Filippetti.

François Richier, French ambassador to India who made the announcement in Mumbai, India, said, “Last year at the Cannes Film Festival, his film ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ received a standing ovation at its premiere at the Directors’ Fortnight. France has a tradition of supporting artists from all over the world. Bestowing the Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters on Anurag is a recognition of his artistic talent and career, and his notable efforts in the promotion of Indian cinema in the world.”
