‘Tiny Times’ Heeds The Call of The North American Market

Controversial Chinese hit heads for stateside release, amid criticism at home

HONG KONG — Consumerist, brand-obsessed Chinese hit movie “Tiny Times” is heading to cinemas in North America this month.

The controversial film, which has run off with over $80 million at the Chinese box office, has been acquired by specialty distributor China Lion Film Distribution. The company will take it out on limited release in Los Angeles, Vancouver and Toronto from July 26 and aims to widen it thereafter.

Written and directed by novelist Guo Jingming, “Tiny Times” has stoked passionate pro and anti debate as it describes a version of the Chinese Dream that is all too capitalist and shallow for many tastes.

State-owned newspaper, The People’s Daily this week blasted the film as guilty of “unconditional indolence” and said that Guo had “cleverly gotten a hold of his own target audience – the vast teenage demographic.”

The Shanghai-set story focuses on four childhood girlfriends’ post-graduate lives, as they find themselves tested amidst drastic changes in their friendships, love lives, and career paths.

“Tiny Times” is Guo’s first film as director. But he is understood to have already shot two sequels, with the first heading for Chinese cinemas as early as next month or September.
