Twitter launches Oscars Index

Tool tracks conversations about six categories

Nearly six weeks out from this year’s Academy Awards, Twitter has launched an Oscars Index that tracks and measures conversations about six key categories.

Announced Wednesday, the oscars.twitter.com tool will reflect audience opinion and frequency of conversations regarding the nominees for best picture, helmer and the four acting categories.

The index measures how Twitter users refer to nominees relative to the overall conversation taking place on any given day. On Jan. 11, the day after the Academy Award nominations were announced, “Silver Linings Playbook” and “Les Miserables” showed an index of 93, meaning comments about those pictures were more positive than approximately 93% of all other terms on Twitter.

The index shows that conversations surrounding Michael Haneke’s “Amour” rose significant on Jan. 10 and 11, immediately following the nominations, as did Twitter discussions of actor nominee Joaquin Phoenix, actress nominee Quvenzhane Wallis, supporting actress nominees Helen Hunt and Jacki Weaver, and director nominee Benh Zeitlin.

The Golden Globe Awards on Sunday generated more than four million tweets.

The next day on Jan. 14, the most recent date currently displayed on the index, “Silver Linings Playbook” topped the best picture index with 95.5 and star Jennifer Lawrence 93.5 in the actress category. However, helmer David O. Russell saw an index of 62 amongst director nominees. Ang Lee saw the highest index on Jan. 14 amongst helmers with 91, while Hugh Jackman topped the best actor index with 93.5.
