Hulu owners News Corp., Disney and NBCUniversal have been looking to install a new CEO since the departure of Jason Kilar earlier this year. Andy Forssell has been serving as interim CEO.
While his parent company gave him an inside track for the position, Hopkins is something of a surprise given his role at Fox Networks is largely as lead negotiator of affiliate agreements for the conglomerate’s broadcast and cable TV properties. Though sales and marketing are also part of his purview, those responsibilities may provide a hint to the future direction of Hulu, which may align itself with pay-TV distributors going forward.
After nearly selling Hulu for the second time in as many years, the streaming service’s owners elected to keep it in-house and pump an additional $750 million into the business earlier this year.
