Rental portal sez Yeah to DVD extras

Online movie rental service Yeah! is taking DVD-like extras to the realm of digital.

AMC Networks announced the launch of YeahTV.com during SXSW in Austin, Texas, on Tuesday.

The streaming service expects to offer about 50 catalog and cult titles in its first year, enhanced with such interactive features as star interviews, streams of factoids and quizzes. The bonus content is displayed onscreen seamlessly without obscuring the movie. Alternatively, fans can opt to pause the film to watch a choice of extras.

Lisa Judson, Yeah! general manager, said the idea is to build on viewers’ relationships with movies. “We take what people already love and make it new because a movie is best when you’ve seen it a dozen times and then learn more that you haven’t heard about it.”

The interviews conducted with talent and producers are “extremely intimate and knowledgeable, pulling the threads of the movie together,” Judson said.

A film will cost $4.99 to rent, and the viewer will have 30 days to watch it and 48 hours to finish once play is pressed.

The service launches with 14 films in the sci-fi, horror and action-adventure genres.

Judson said initial titles such as “A Nightmare on Elm Street” and “Superman” target young males. “By summer we’ll reach out to teen audiences with movies like ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2.’ ”

Also in the summer an iPad app will be introduced. By next year, Yeah! hopes to have a “download to own” feature as well as TV content.

As for obtaining the rights to the films, Judson says studios are behind the new venture and “have been great partners from day one to work with.”
