Swedish videogamer Felix Kjellberg now has 11.941 million subscribers, narrowly edging previous leader Smosh

Swedish videogamer Felix Kjellberg, who goes by the YouTube moniker “PewDiePie,” now has the most popular channel on the Google video site with 11.941 million subscribers as of Friday.

PewDiePie may be virtually unknown among mainstream auds — but his YouTube channel has more subscribers than those run by celebs including Rihanna, Justin Bieber, One Direction and Taylor Swift.

The PewDiePie channel has garnered more than 2.2 billion video views to date. Earlier this year, the Swede teamed up with multichannel network company Maker Studios. PewDiePie and his channel are featured as a cornerstone member of the Polaris network (previously called “The Game Station”).

“When I started my YouTube channel in 2010, I never imagined that one day it would be the most subscribed channel in the world and that I would be a part of such a great community,” Kjellberg said in a statement.

Previously, the top YouTube channel was Smosh, featuring comedy duo Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla, which is run by Alloy Digital. Smosh closely trails PewDiePie, with 11.926 million subscribers as of Friday.

Kjellberg plays games and records his commentary and reactions, specializing in horror and action genres. He’s known for his shrieks of fear and joy, appealing to a global audience he calls “The Bros.” The PewDiePie channel also features montages that weave together the best bits from other vids:

According to Maker Studios, PewDiePie — pronounced “pew-dee-pie” — will celebrate his No. 1 slot with a slate of upcoming videos. “I’m just a guy from Sweden who likes to laugh and make other people laugh,” Kjellberg says in the description section of his YouTube channel.

In addition to his own content, Kjellberg has created videos with girlfriend Marzia Bisognin (a.k.a CutiePieMarzia), who also is a Maker Studios partner and part of fashion and beauty network The Platform.

PewDiePie “is a great example of how a YouTube content creator can amass a worldwide following due to passion and creativity, and his large subscriber base showcases the loyalty and strong connection he has to his ‘bros,’” said Ben Donovan, co-founder and prexy of Maker Studios.

Culver City, Calif.-based Maker Studios’ investors include Time Warner Inc.; Greycroft Partners; Robert Downey Jr.; Elisabeth Murdoch; FUEL: M+C, the investment company for Jon Miller and Jimmy Yaffe; Maker chairman Ynon Kreiz; Daher Capital; and Lightstorm’s Jon Landau.
