Netflix Launches The Netherlands

It’s official: Netflix has gone Dutch.

As Variety reported earlier this week, Netflix on Wednesday launched its Internet streaming service in the Netherlands, priced at €7.99 per month (about $10.59 U.S.).

Netflix’s debut in the Netherlands — its seventh European country and 41st country launch overall — comes on the heels of the company striking a pact with U.K. cable operator Virgin Media to provide access to Netflix to the MSO’s TiVo subscribers, directly through their set-top.

The deal with Virgin — Netflix’s first with a pay TV operator — helped push Netflix shares to an all-time high Tuesday. Netflix closed at $313.06, up 6.4% for the day, giving the company a market cap of about $18.5 billion.

Content available to Netflix’s Netherlands subs includes top Hollywood movies, TV shows, docus, indie films, stand-up comedy, a range of kids’ titles and local Dutch titles. As in other territories, users can sign up for a free one-month trial.

The lineup includes all eps of four Netflix original series: the Emmy-nominated “House of Cards,” season four of comedy “Arrested Development,” “Orange Is the New Black,” “Hemlock Grove.” In addition, “Derek,” a comedy from Ricky Gervais, will be available in the Netherlands with its launch in the U.S. and elsewhere on Sept. 12.

Other content available in the Netherlands at at launch are previous full seasons of U.S. shows such as “Dexter,” “Homeland,” “Lost,” “Modern Family,” “Pretty Little Liars,” “Spartacus” and “The Vampire Diaries.” In addition, the lineup includes full seasons of international TV such as British series “Luther” and “Sherlock” as well as Scandinavian series “The Killing” and “The Bridge.”

“We’re proud to bring the future of television to the Netherlands,” Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said in announcing the launch. “The Dutch have incredible broadband, but until today have not been able to take full advantage of their fast connections. Now people in the Netherlands can subscribe to Netflix and instantly watch great TV shows and movies anywhere, anytime, for one low monthly price.”

Among the Dutch-language titles now on Netflix in the Netherlands are feature films “Alles is Liefde,” “All Stars 2: Old Stars,” “De Heineken Ontvoering,” “Gooische Vrouwen” and “Sonny Boy.” Dutch comedies on Netflix include Hans Teeuwen’s “Spiksplinter” and Lebbis’ “Branding.” Kids’ fare includes “Adventure Time,” “My Little Pony,” “The Adventures of Tintin” and movies such as Pixar’s “Ratatouille” and “Wall-E.”
