Netflix Inks NBCU Pacts for Canada, the Netherlands

Deals bring TV shows and movies from the Peacock to Netflix members in two more countries

Netflix has cut two separate deals with NBCUniversal, expanding beyond their multiyear agreement for the U.S. to bring the Peacock’s TV shows and movies to Internet video subscribers in Canada and the Netherlands.

The deal for Netflix Canada, brokered by NBCUniversal Television and New Media Distribution, covers exclusive subscription VOD access beginning Dec. 1 to the first two seasons of “Downton Abbey” and seasons 1 and 2A of legal drama “Suits.”

In 2014, other NBCU shows such as “Bates Motel,” “Psych,” “Covert Affairs,” “Heroes” and “Friday Night Lights” also will become available to Canadian Netflix members. In addition, the deal covering the Great White North includes a selection of movies to be available starting this month including “Bridesmaids,” “Fast Five,” “The Change Up” and the first three films in the Bourne franchise.

“Bringing NBCUniversal’s content to Netflix’s Canadian marketplace is a natural progression to our longstanding relationship with Netflix,” Frances Manfredi, president of NBCUniversal Television & New Media for U.S. & Canada, said in a statement.

Separately, under an agreement with NBCUniversal International TV Distribution, Netflix licensed an array of NBCU series including “Suits,” “Heroes” and the first three seasons of “Downton Abbey” for members in the Netherlands. Other TV shows covered in the Dutch deal include “Grimm,” “Bates Motel” and “Battlestar Galactica”; movies include “Knocked Up,” “The Big Lebowski,” “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” and “The 40-Year-Old Virgin.”

Netflix launched in the Netherlands in September.

NBCU renewed its deal with Netflix for U.S. subscribers in 2011. Under that accord the Peacock guaranteed access to future seasons of certain shows.

Netflix also has a deal with NBCU covering the U.K. and Ireland.
