Netflix may be looking to lighten up, if its latest hire is any indication.
After exploding onto the original programming scene with dramatic hourlong series including “House of Cards” and “Orange is the New Black,” the streaming service has tapped a TV comedy veteran, the company announced Monday.
Jane Wiseman joins Netflix from Chernin Entertainment, where she oversaw development and production on comedies like “New Girl.” Previously, she held down similar roles at NBC Universal, where she shepherded “Community” and “Parks & Recreation.”
While Wiseman is expected to focus on drama efforts as well, the hire gives Netflix its first live-action comedy development specialist at a time when its only laffer to date, the “Arrested Development” revival, came fully formed from 21st Century Fox, and no live-action original comedies are publicly known to be in its development pipeline.
Wiseman reports to Netflix’s original programming chief, Cindy Holland.
