CES: Walmart extends disc-to-digital to homes

Retailer also friends Facebook for new app

Walmart is extending its “disc-to-digital” conversion of DVDs to U.S. homes, the company announced Monday.

In addition, the retail giant is launching a Facebook-based app aiming to put a social layer on shopping for movies.

Since April, the disc-to-digital initiative has been allowing DVD owners to bring discs into Walmart stores and transfer them into files that could be downloaded or streamed via the Ultraviolet format.

Now consumers can do same without venturing to Walmart via app Vudu to Go, an offshoot of the streaming service owned by the retail giant. Consumers will continue to be charged $2 to convert standard definition, high-definition or Blu-ray discs to digital. Upgrading discs to high definition costs $5.

Participating studios are DreamWorks Animation, Lionsgate, MGM Studios, Paramount Home Media Distribution, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, Universal Studios Home Entertainment and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. Walt Disney Pictures is not taking part in the effort.

The new Walmart Facebook Entertainment App will allow users to vote on which movies should be featured in Walmart stores and online; make viewer recommendations; take part in promotions and see exclusive content related to the films.
