Amazon Locks Up Five NBCU Dramas, Playing Keep-Away from Netflix

E-retailer strikes four-year exclusive for NBC's 'Grimm' and 'Hannibal,' USA's 'Covert Affairs' and 'Suits,' and Syfy's 'Defiance'

Amazon.com inked an expanded pact with NBCUniversal, which includes exclusive streaming rights to five drama series from NBC, USA Network and Syfy for four years — freezing out Netflix.

Under deal with Peacock, members of Amazon’s Prime free two-day shipping program, which have access to a collection streaming video titles for no extra charge, will have access to prior seasons of: NBC’s fantasy drama “Grimm,” available today, and psycho-thriller “Hannibal” (pictured above) later this year; USA’s “Suits” and “Covert Affairs,” both available today; and Syfy’s “Defiance,” available in early 2014.

The Internet retailer has been aggressively expanding its TV lineup to challenge Netflix, the U.S. leader in subscription-video streaming services.

Also under the renewed pact, Prime Instant Video starting today will add past seasons of NBC’s “Smash” as well as Syfy drama skeins “Alphas,” “Eureka” and “Warehouse 13”. In addition, Amazon is getting kidvids including “Curious George” and “Land Before Time,” both available in the Kindle FreeTime Unlimited content service.

“We’re excited to expand our relationship with Amazon by adding great NBCUniversal content to Prime Instant Video,” said Frances Manfredi, prexy of NBCU Cable & New Media Distribution. “With Amazon, we’re giving our established viewers a chance to catch-up on what they missed while simultaneously reaching and engaging new audiences who may not have seen these great series on their premiering networks.”

Amazon’s Prime Instant Video now offers 40,000-plus movies and TV episodes available across a range of devices, including Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablets. The Prime program costs $79 per year.
