CES: Disney bows ‘Ralph’ on digital before DVD

Studio tests earlier online release; Blu-rays offer extras

Disney will use “Wreck-It Ralph” to test whether it can boost homevid sales of films on digital platforms before they hit DVD and Blu-ray. Toon is the first film the Mouse House is releasing to buy on digital before disc, and follows the shuttering of its Disney Movies Online service last month.

Studio plans to release HD and digital 3D versions of the film on Feb. 12 before two- and four-disc combo packs of the film bow on DVD and Blu-ray on March 5 at retailers.

The Blu-rays will come with exclusives like “Disney Intermission: The Gamer’s Guide to Wreck-It Ralph,” which gives viewers an in-depth tour of the film when it’s paused, and “Bit by Bit: Creating the Worlds of Wreck-It Ralph,” which Disney hopes will help boost appeal of the discs.

Digital move is the latest for Disney as it experiments with online distribution methods for its films, inking a deal with Netflix, also last month, in which it will exclusively stream classic Disney films through the service, and offer future Disney movies eight months after their theatrical runs.

“Wreck-It Ralph” earned $311 million worldwide.
