The evolution of Variety continues with today’s live launch of the redesigned Variety.com. And, to the relief of readers and staffers, the paywall has come down.
The new website addresses years of requests from readers, with a site that’s easy to navigate and automatically configures material to platforms of various sizes and shapes, from large monitors to tablets to mobile devices.
The new website is part of ongoing changes under Penske Media, which bought Variety in October.
Among the new features:
- An adaptive design for desktop, tablets and mobile phones. Explore the site with your favorite device.
- An expandable navigation bar that previews essential content from each site section
- A new Video channel featuring news, events, trailers and interviews
- Voices: a collection of columnists, opinion, analysis, insight and perspective on the business of entertainment
- Scene: a section dedicated to premiere and party coverage with VPage photo galleries, as well as people news, industry events and more
- VScore: an interactive dashboard for all of the critical business metrics across the industry as well as custom analysis from the Variety team. A unique destination to capture the key dynamics of the industry (coming soon).

Browsing for example tv reviews is not so fun anymore… You have to click tv-menu twice to get to tv main page and then click reviews and you still get only small list of most recent reviews…
Excellent
What’s up with the clean site? Did I miss anything or did Variety just decide to join the digital age?
VARIETY joined the digital age during the last century.
I’m glad to see commenting functionality available with the new design. Pretty impressed with what I’ve seen so far.
i’m delighted as all get, the availablity of commenting. it’s a RIP! i could go on because there is no better reading material to pls my entertaining mind. maryc.
Major improvement from the old site. Interesting use of the navigation once scrolling lower on the pages!
VARIETY.COM has never ever been an “old site” and the change is a gift to remember for myself.
Might look great on an iPhone but looks like a kid’s version of Variety on Firefox on a PC. *Giant* headlines and pictures, tons of scrolling required to get to actual content. Some setable cookie to shrink things for the desktop browser would be very appreciated.
it’s a GREAT LOOK on an iphone. i have seen firefox on a pc. works for anyone, i followed up… you need patience because IT IS NEW. OK, all in due season. i, personally cannot get to any other reading besides VARIETY.COM the NY&LA TIMES. every morning VARIETY.COM is all i can think about, before i start the job and it holds me together until i turn it on, AGAIN! at night.
I have been a Variety reader for years but have to admit I never signed up for a subscription once the website paywall was introduced….its great to read all my favorites again.
Where are obits and other people news?
This new format is beyond awful. Re-design fast or I’m never opening the site again.
The search function does not seem to work, as I am searching for a film reviewed two days ago, and it shows up on Google but not on the site. The Google URL is also no longer valid. Furthermore, browsing on the Film Review section does not work. I can only navigate the first page and the second page is not found.
WOW! what a breath of fresh air.
a breath of fresh air 24-7.
I love lots about the new site, … but the lack of an index or t.o.c. is eccentric and un-user-friendly… or maybe it’s a bug … or maybe it’s there but not obvious in terms of how to access it. Thanks, of course, for taking the paywall down. Hope you don’t pull a Reader’s Digest on us … or go from owner to owner, each one banking on the brand’s power, all the while diminishing it.
no need to hope,,, in reference to RD, or anything else. VARIETY.COM always walks or runs up the STAIRS! and if any magazine can FLY up the stairs, of course, VARIETY.COM trends ahead of everyone else!
Now I can finally view your site on my iphone! Love the new design.
