Sony’s Chris Cookson to Receive Lifetime Achievement Emmy

Sony Pictures Technologies president leads the charge to 4K UHD TV

Prexy of Sony Picture Technologies Chris Cookson will be honored with the Charles F. Jenkins Lifetime Achievement Award at the 65th Primetime Emmy Engineering Awards, to be held Oct. 23 at the Loews Hollywood Hotel.

The annual award goes to a person whose contributions in the industry have significantly affected the state of television technology and engineering. Cookson, who also serves as chief officer at the Sony 3D Technology Center, has moved production processes from analog to digital, developed methods for film restoration and patented methods of carrying high-quality data on optical media. He holds more than 60 U.S. patents.

Cookson has received two Emmys and done substantial work for Warner Bros., where he was president of technical operations division prior to joining Sony, ABC and CBS.  He became president at Sony Picture Technologies in 2008. In 2009, he opened Colorworks, Sony Pictures’ 4K digital intermediate facility.

Cookson is among those leading the charge in the transition to 4K Ultra Hi-Def TV. His team also leads efforts to curb online piracy, and he’s leading the studio’s effort to set up cloud-based production tools.

The Academy also announced that Engineering Emmys will go to YouTube, Aspera’s FASP transport technology, Digital Dailies, iZotope RX audio repair technology and Lightcraft’s Previzion virtual studio system. Sennheiser Electronic Corp.  will receive the Philo T. Farnsworth award.
