French director Laurent Cantet, who won the Palme d’Or in 2008 for “The Class,” will direct “Vuelta a Itaca,” a drama set in Cuba.

Script for Spanish-language pic is by Cantet and Cuban novelist Leonardo Padura.

“Itaca” is set on a rooftop terrace in present-day Havana. It begins at dusk with the unexpected re-appearance of Amadeo after a 16-year exile.

Over one night, Amadeo and his childhood friends retrace their lives, gradually revealing their doubts, secrets and broken dreams.

Didar Domehri, Gael Nouaille and Laurent Baudens will produce for their Paris-based Full House.

“Itaca,” which is currently casting Cuban actors, is tying down financing and is scheduled to go into production late this year.

Cantet said pic will shoot on a rooftop terrace in Havana facing the sea on one side, a sea of rooftops on the other, with kids playing, mothers talking, men killing a pig, youngsters having a party.

Cantet first met Padura, a writer he has admired for years, in 2010 when shooting his short, “The Fountain,” produced by Domehri, for omnibus feature “7 Days in Havana,” he said.
