Sony Marketing Chief Marc Weinstock Is Out

Marc Weinstock, prexy of worldwide marketing at Sony Pictures, has been ousted after the studio’s disappointing summer at the box office. Weinstock has been with Sony since 2000.

Sony’s string of flops started with “After Earth,” followed by “White House Down” and “Elysium.” The studio’s better-performing summer release, “The Smurfs 2,” still underperformed the original.

Michael Lynton and Amy Pascal came under intense scrutiny this past summer after Third Point chieftan Daniel Loeb, one of Sony’s largest shareholders, criticized studio management for a lack of accountability and profitability in the studio division. Loeb singled out several of those summer box office disappointments in his criticism of management.

Though the studio has yet to set a replacement, Sony’s digital marketing head Dwight Caines may be in line to succeed Weinstock at some point, according to sources close to the studio. Caines has been at Sony for 16 years. He was named president of worldwide digital marketing in 2008, a role in which he actually reported to Weinstock.

Last week, Sony axed its senior veep of media relations Steve Elzer.

The recent studio reshuffling has extended to Universal’s top ranks, as well. The Comcast-owned studio booted chairman Adam Fogelson and installing TV exec Jeff Shell to oversee movie operations. By comparison, Universal had an outstanding summer at the box office with such hits as “Despicable Me 2” and “Fast and Furious 6.”

    I’d say it has more to do with the current crop of untalented fame seeking so-called “actors” … They are all boring, dull, and talentless. Who wants to pay money to watch some inauthentic actor (male and female) who is more interested in being famous than the actual role? It’s repulsive.

    Sony must fire Amy Pascal instead. Come on! Who is so stupid to greenlight a tentpole with M. Night Shyamalan in the director’s chair?

    I agree with the others, this sounds like a royal “pass the buck” on this poor guy to me. Sony had a lot of bad pictures, and many of them very expensive too. They still have the idea that if you have a ‘big star’ or what used to be a big star, like Will Smith, then the story and the rest do not matter that much. After Earth is a huge vanity project to placate Smith and son, the funny part of I would not at all put it past Sony or some other studio to give Will Smith another $100 million plus picture, and that one will might fail too. The days of superstars shouldering crap pictures is kinda over I think.

    Yes. Blame the marketing for not being able to sell a film as terrible as After Earth. All these business and money minded executives running the creative industry. Oh well, but someone needed to take the blame. Sony can’t fire Will Smith, M. Night or the Execs who green-lit the sad sack of potatoes that After Earth is, so lets fire the guy who we dumped the stinking heap on. Tag! You’re it! Well done studio! Yippe!

    The moral of the story? Make a name for yourself, a lot of money and powerful friends so you can produce a crap film that you probably came up with while taking your morning dump yesterday, which you and your son can also then star in. No one says no in Hollywood if the boss says yes or you’d get fired. And even if you do say yes, you just lived to die another day. Keep shifting the blame to the next person and you’ll survive.. at least for awhile.

    His son has lots of talent! But he’s impostor! Will’s real SON, works the Oil Rigs in OK! And has a simple
    non-shallow life. Listening to Country music and playing chess! Jayden is CLONE created by Jorge Lukas of Star Warz fame! Jayden lives the high-life. While the Smith family eats at Spago and Mr. Chen’s. While I eat at Dairy Queen….
    Don’t blame the Marketing of the film, for it’s failure. Blame Will-e-Will’s Enlarged EGO and his Cloned son’s Talent! Will & Jada don’t know the truth! When I try to meet them.. it’s HELLO JADEN! Then I say… I’m Will Smith Jr. don’t you know you’re own SON?

    One can’t blame marketing for the worse film of the year in Scientology driven rubbish such as AFTER EARTH. Blame Will Smith and his extremely talentless son who had starred billing because of nepotism!! Films such as AFTER EARTH had an embarrassing shocking screenplay that could have been written by an undemanding boy scout! The direction, cinematography and the level of acting seemed like it was by an amateur without acting nuance in the lack of performances. Will Smith son should not have star-billing this early in his career as he doesn’t have an acting bone in his body. ELYSUIM and WHITE HOUSE DOWN are solid films, not perfect, but solid. WHD didn’t perform because of the identical nature to OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN. If WHD came before OLYMPUS it would have made a profit for the studio and one can blame marketing for that costly slip-up. ELYSIUM is a solid average film that was underwhelming but one can’t blame marketing for the disaster that was AFTER EARTH!

    I was in studio marketing for a lot of years. No one ever asks marketing if they can sell the movie. They just hand it to them and say “Make it happen”
    What did we ever know…
