‘Newsroom’ Renewed for Third Season by HBO

Jeff Daniels The Newsroom Emmy

Viewership relatively steady in season two

HBO has renewed Aaron Sorkin’s “Newsroomfor a third season.

Jeff Daniels made the announcement Tuesday on Twitter, calling it “official,” though HBO itself did not issue the news. Still, it’s not a surprise, given that the show has become the kind of conversation piece HBO values – and even though it remains somewhat polarizing, the critical notices have improved compared with season one.

In a negligible decline, viewership has averaged nearly 2 million per episode this season, putting aside how well the show draws in repeat airings on the paybler and on HBO Go.

The news came the same day as HBO announced – officially – that “True Blood” would end its run with its seventh season in 2014. “True Blood” averages about double the audience of “The Newsroom,” which wraps its slightly abbreviated second season of nine episodes with a two-parter airing Sept. 8 and Sept. 15.

Update: HBO issued a statement Wednesday but stopped short of a full-fledged press release, saying, “We are excited about proceeding to a Season 3 and are continuing our conversations with Aaron about schedules.”
