Katz’s appointment starts in July, after Genachowski exits the agency, expected some time this month. Genachowski presided over what is likely his final commission meeting on Thursday.
Katz will develop and advise on programs and research projects related to broadband, mobile and data initiatives. The USC Center is based at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. As chief counsel for Genachowski and later his chief of staff, Katz led initiatives including the agency’s crafting and adoption of open Internet rules.
Katz joined the FCC in 2009 from the Office of White House Counsel, and had previously practiced law at Munger, Tolles & Olson in Los Angeles.
