“He’s fine, thank God!!” his wife, Arlene, tweeted on Monday.

According to the California Highway Patrol’s incident log, officers responded to a report of a burning vehicle on the eastbound 101 Freeway near Parkway Calabasas around 2. p.m. on Monday.

I heard on TV when a reporter asked Mr. Pennington if he had heard from DVD after the
horrific auto accident. Jason said, no. ??
I wonder why DVD could not take a few minutes to either call his lifesaver, send him buckets
of $$$$$ and/or DO SOMETHING WONDERFUL FOR THE MAN WHO SAVED HIS LIFE!!!!!!

    • Julia Campbell says:

I suspect that a man not capable of remembering to change oil in his high-priced Jag might also be incapable of remembering his rescuer as well…

  2. I am happy Dick Van Dyke is okay. He is one of my favorite actors. I have always loved watching The Dick Van Dyke Show. He was also very funny on a Scooby Door cartoon in the ’70’s. May God bless the Van Dyke family. Shalohm. Sincerely yours, Ron E. Pennington-Satterfield.,

  3. Dick VanDyke has always been my favorite of all the “Hollywood bunch”. I still watch the re-runs of his shows and absolutely will not miss “Diagnosis Murder”. I have never thought he . So glad your okay, has received the credit he deserves as the “Best entertainer of all time”. Mr. Van Dyke, so glad to hear you are okay! Tracie

  4. eva johnson says:

Thank God! Be well Mr. Van Dyke! We all love you!

    • James says:

His wife is trying to kill him. Shes half his age and doesn’t want to wait any longer (to get her hands on all the $$). He had an ‘UN-explainable’ illness in April 2013, and now his brand new Jag bursts into flames.

      • American Made says:

Unless she bought him the Jaguar, not to worry. Jags are famous (or infamous) for their terrible electrical systems and a flaming Jag is not a rare occurrence. Life is far too short to own a British car.

  5. occultology says:

Only Dick Van Dyke can make a near death experience amusing! Glad you’re still with us Mr. DVD!

  12. FelixG says:

    I’m glad it wasn’t Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang.

  13. Paul says:

Smoke filled car? Maybe it needed a Chim-Chimney Sweep?

  14. K1234 says:

My brother’s Jaguar caught on fire after he dropped it off at the dealer for regular maintenance. No real explanation given, but they gave him a great deal on a new one. Glad Mr. Van Dyke is okay. He is one of my all time favorite actors/entertainers.

    • Herbie Loves Buggery says:

Of course that is what everyone wants after a car fire with no explainable cause…a discount on another car from the same fiery batch…

Did not know he was still alive these days…good luck to Dick.

  15. NooYawkah says:

Does he have a new movie coming out?

  16. greg says:

So what caused the car to catch on fire? Was he involved in a crash?

  17. Delphinus says:

Anyone else find it interesting he has a Twitter account? I wonder if he’s the oldest celebrity to have one.

  18. bill says:

where was his riding mechanic? I thought all Jags came with a riding mechanic.

  19. robert says:

Jaguar? I thought he had money and class. WTF?

  20. Good thing that Robert Zimmerman was around.

  21. Joe Morra says:

Boy, that must have been some fire! It melted the hood, alloy wheels and seems to have turned the car into a burt-out hulk. Loved him in his ’50’s show. A true classic.

  22. JulieAnn Stone says:

Thank God that Dick Van Dyke was okay. God’s angels must have been watching after him! To me that means there must be a divine purpose for the rest of his life. I’ve always loved watching Dick Van Dyke on TV, and still do. I call these close calls a “God sighting”. Thanks to the heroic and successful efforts of Jason Pennington who had the courage to step forward to rescue him!

  23. Bob bralver says:

With out a stunt double you still the greatest. God bless

  24. BenderRodriguez says:

Yeah, thank god. Forget about the man that actually risked himself to rescue DVD.

  25. Bennie says:

Why does Dick Van Dyke look like a blonde Romulan in the footage shot? Fascinating….

  26. Charlene says:

Old Dick would have been better off in a Cougar.

  27. Crystal says:

Thank you, Jason, for saving Dick Van Dyke. Great comedian and dancer, Chitty Bang Bang and Mary Poppins are wonderful family movies. I am thrilled you weren’t injured, Mr. Van Dyke.

You nasty people who are saying cruel things, please go away.

  28. SI says:

    LOL! Perfect!

  29. David Powell says:

Thank G-d he’s alright, great actor and as others here have said, a national treasure. He was probably staying with the car and waiting for a tow, while keeping an eye on the fire – Most likely an engine fire – But the fire is no joke. Glad someone got him out of there. Have to bail at that point.

  30. MikeNowicki says:

    He was great on Coach…hilarious.

  31. Daninsac says:

If you think he’s to old to drive….you don’t know Dick!

  32. Wait just a second. Dick Van Dyke at 87 is out on the freeways with me? SHIT! I am very glad he’s okay but the Van Dyke Family have got to pull that license. He needs to not only be protected–but we as well! Sad but necessary. I hated doing it for my 84 yr-old mom, but she’s alive at 94 and so am I at 63. And probably many untold others.

    • Nancy M says:

Richard, yes it is painful. My Dad never did forgive my Mom – he did live til 90 and she is still going at 91 (she willingly stopped driving on her own years ago).

Today in a suburb, driving is freedom. We love our freedom even when we lose our judgement. But, driving is a privilege – NOT a RIGHT.

I’ve been in your spot and your love made the right call. It isn’t easy, is it?

  33. stg5ive says:

I think I’m the only one who got that LMAO!!!!

  34. Tomhan says:

I grew up with DVD on TV and have always loved his personality.

  35. Jim in saigon says:

I agree with the folks who question the wisdom of an 87-year old driving(Especially a high performance automobile.)

I am delighted that Dick was not injured or killed in the incident. It would have been a tragic ending unbefitting a great source of humor.

  36. Marty says:

    It was George Bush’s fault.

  37. David Chase says:

The car is a new Jaguar XJS Sedan, the top of the line….Ask Patty Stanger..she has one…

  38. Kim Leverenz says:

Danvilie sends their blessings. We are all so proud of you and all that you have done to help this town. Take care.

  39. Patrice says:

I just drove by that SAME SPOT around the SAME TIME, SUNDAY and there was another car burning, an older VW Bug. The brush had caught fire as well apparently as on my return trip back firefighters were dousing the hillside.

  40. carlb says:

shut up mel was my favorite line. met a mel in school asked where he got it. he said his parents were big fans of his show. allot name dick. don’t know if there parents were fans. lol

  41. Rico says:

    Thank God,indeed!

  42. Galord Farquahar says:

Not for nothing is Lucas called “the Prince of Darkness” in Britain.

  43. Sheila says:

Not everyone was thinking it. You’re just uninformed.

  44. Jim says:

The pride of Danville Illinois! And yes, someone at Jaguar USA is busy sending a new car to Mr. Van Dyke very quickly, before this video goes viral.

  45. MarksSparks says:

    I didn’t know Chitty was a hardtop.

  46. PapaUmMaoMao says:

Dick Van Dyke is an American icon… a national treasure! Glad to know he wasn’t injured and is okay!

  47. iri says:

    Huh, George Zimmerman strikes again.

  48. Not a good ad for Jaguar!

    Thankfully, Dick is all right.
