Comic-Con: IDW Gets Graphic with Hunter S. Thompson

IDW Publishing goes gonzo with Thompson's 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas'

IDW Publishing will adapt Hunter S. Thompsons novel “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” into a graphic novel.

But its president and CEO Ted Adams has always wanted to introduce Thompson’s book to a new generation of readers in a more visual form.

IDW has yet to tap the creative team around the new book, but it plans to keep the rebellious spirit of the story.

“I’ve read Thompson throughout my entire life, I’m very serious about doing this novel right,” Adams said. “This exciting new project further explores the literary relationship between novels and comics that IDW actively pursues.”

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” revolves around Thompson’s surreal journey through Las Vegas and his influence under stimulants and pshychedelics. Terry Gilliam adapted the book into the 1998 film that starred Johnny Depp, but it has never received the graphic novel treatment — odd, given the subject matter and its gonzo history.

IDW also adapts books by authors Stephen King Anne Rice, Cory Doctorow, George R.R. Martin, Harlan Ellison, Richard Stark and James Patterson.

It also has licensed titles like “Transformers,” “G.I. Joe,” “My Little Pony,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” “True Blood” and “Godzilla,” and its own books are also being adapted into movies, with Disney developing “World War Robot,” with Jerry Bruckheimer; Dwayne Johnson attached to “Lore;” and Michael Bay and Sony on “Zombies vs. Robots.”
