"Cloud Atlas" backer hires head of film

HONG KONG – China’s Dreams of the Dragon Pictures has appointed Christopher DeHau Lee as its president of film entertainment.

Lee, who was previously with Will Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment and with Ron Burkle’s Absolute Entertainment, will be based in Beijing and Los Angeles. He was also an executive at DMG, the Chinese partner on “Iron Man 3” and ran his own company Move Eye Media.

DDP was an equity investor in “Cloud Atlas” and was producer of Chinese films “Heaven Eternal, Youth Everlasting” and horror thriller “The Man Behind The Courtyard House.”

Its upcoming slate includes a romantic drama “Old Summer Palace,” which is a feature derivative of popular Chinese TV series of the same name, and a fact-based suspense film about the unsolved death of Canadian Elisa Lam .

Lee is expected to head in-house development, co-production and co-financing, and acquire to titles for China release.

The company is headed by founder and chairman Wilson Qiu and claims the well-known Hong Kong line producer Philip Lee as a long-term consultant.

“Cloud Atlas” enjoyed one of its biggest successes in China, scoring $27.7 million at the box office.
