Review: ‘41’

Produced by his friend Jerry Weintraub — the subject of his own livelier HBO documentary — “41” is a dutifully admiring tribute to George H.W. Bush, told almost entirely in his own words. Capsulizing Bush’s eventful life required tough choices even at feature length, but the discussion omits or gives short shrift to most topics apt to yield headlines or make this more than an 88th-birthday homage to the former President. Producer/director/co-writer Jeffrey Roth spent extensive time with the man and endeavors to humanize him, but ultimately delivers a film long on biography and short on insight.
