'Friends' alum to serve as showrunner on NBC laffer's second season
NBC and Universal TV have recruited “Friends” alum Wil Calhoun as exec producer and showrunner of “Whitney.”
Calhoun takes the reins of the multicam sitcom from Betsy Thomas, who is seguing to NBC’s frosh comedy “Guys With Kids” as a co-exec producer.
Calhoun was brought into the Universal TV fold earlier this year under an overall deal. He’d been meeting with the studio about possibly consulting on the Whitney Cummings starrer in its second season, and those conversations soon expanded to him signing on as showrunner.
Calhoun has focused on penning pilot scripts in recent years. He’s also pitched in for friends as a writer-producer on such as series as “I Hate My Teenage Daughter” and “Gary Unmarried.”
Calhoun is repped by UTA and attorney Jeanne Newman of Hansen Jacobson.
