TOKYO — TV Asahi, one of Japan’s five commercial networks, is partnering with London-based Zodiak Media Group to produce programming for the international market.The network will team with Zodiak subsid Zodiak Rights to develop variety shows — a key Japanese genre — primarily for the U.S. and European market, starting this year. The shows will first air on TV Asahi, then Zodiak will sell the formats to foreign broadcasters. The partners will split the licensing revenue from the deals. TV Asahi has a similar partnership arrangement with programming powerhouse, FremantleMedia. Other Japanese networks, including TBS and Fuji TV, are becoming more active in overseas format sales as ad revenues from their home market continue to soften. Yoshimoto Kogyo, a leading Japanese talent shop, has a programming production partnership with Hollywood-based CAA to develop pilots to market globally.
