Disney launches top-rated new talkshow in 10 years

Disney’s syndicated series “Katie” opened to perky numbers Monday, matching the top-rated daytime talkshow debut of the last decade.

According to Nielsen estimates for the nation’s 56 metered markets, the Katie Couric-hosted series “Katie” earned a 2.8 household rating/8 share to easily lead a pack of new talkers. “Steve Harvey” opened to a 1.5/4 last week, while “Jeff Probst” (1.0) and “Ricki Lake” (0.8/2) had modest bows this week.

It opened with the best overnight score of any of the 25 daytime talkshows to premiere since “Dr. Phil” in September 2002. “Rachael Ray” also opened to a 2.8 metered-market rating, in 2006.

“Katie” built on its lead-in in the metered markets by 12% (2.8/8 vs. 2.5/8). It also improved its time period year over year by 22% (September 2011 averages was 2.3/6).

“Katie” is exec-produced by Katie Couric and Jeff Zucker and is distributed by Disney-ABC Domestic Television. Co-exec producers are Kathy Samuels and Michael Bass and the program is directed by Joseph Terry.
