Stephens to topline ‘Black Sails’ for Starz

Michael Bay series set to launch in 2014 on pay cabler

Toby Stephens has been tabbed for the lead role of Capt. Flint in the upcoming Michael Bay series “Black Sails” for Starz.

Eight-episode series, which is expected to air in 2014, is a pirate-themed adventure project that is based 20 years prior to Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel “Treasure Island.”

London-born Stephens is mostly unknown to American auds. He appeared in the James Bond film “Die Another Day” and has a long history of starring in British television series as well as on the English legit stage. He’ll appear in the upcoming bigscreen pic “All Things to All Men,” opposite Gabriel Byrne and Rufus Sewell.

Bay will exec produce with Platinum Dunes shingle partners Brad Fuller and Andrew Form, as well as creator Jon Steinberg. Production will begin in Cape Town, South Africa later this year.
