SPT, FremantleMedia, Burnett prep ‘Apprentice Asia’

Show, starring entrepreneur Fernandes, will bow on AXN

Sony Pictures Television Networks Asia is teaming up with reality TV guru Mark Burnett and FremantleMedia Asia to produce “The Apprentice Asia,” featuring entrepreneur Tony Fernandes, which will bow on AXN in 21 countries in the first half of 2013.

The elimination competition format will pit Asia-based business executives against each other for the lucrative opportunity to work for one of Fernandes’ companies.

Fernandes, named Asia’s businessman of the year by Forbes magazine in 2010, is worth an estimated $700 million. His Malaysian entertainment and leisure arm, Tune Group, owns low-cost airline AirAsia and the Caterham Formula 1 motor racing team. He also bought English Premier League soccer team Queens Park Rangers.

“AXN is the perfect platform for ‘The Apprentice Asia.’ The competitive nature and entrepreneurial spirit of the format combined with Tony’s dynamic personality, is sure to entertain Asian audiences,” said Ricky Ow, executive veep of Sony Pictures TV Networks Asia.

Skein will be presented by Expedia, Hilton Hotels & Resorts and AirAsia.
