Showtime is staying in Renaissance mode with a third-season order for “The Borgias.” Production is set to begin this summer in Budapest.
Drama, starring Jeremy Irons as Pope Alexander VI, will return in 2013. Ten episodes have been ordered.
Series was created by exec producer Neil Jordan, who writes and directs a handful of episodes. In addition to Irons, show stars Francois Arnaud, Holliday Grainger and Joanne Whalley.
Now in the middle of its second season, the show drew 2.6 million for its first episode on April 8, including repeats, DVR usage and on demand plays over seven days. That’s down from last season’s average, but Showtime sampled this year’s premiere online in March.
