Sandy victims invited to Thanksgiving feast

Food Network, others set Our Table Is Yours fundraiser for Wed.

It won’t be a typical Thanksgiving for the many people in New York and New Jersey still suffering from the devastation of Sandy.

Food Network, Cooking Channel and beverage distrib Southern Wine & Spirits of America are attempting to make it a little easier for about 1,000 senior citizens and their families by hosting a Thanksgiving meal at Cipriani Wall Street on Wednesday.

The daylong Our Table Is Yours gathering is also fundraiser for the Food Bank for New York City. A number of celeb chefs and luminaries will be on hand. Guests will receive a second prepared meal to take home, as well as gift cards from a range of retailers and info on how to apply for food stamps and other benefits.

Food Bank for New York City mobilized quickly after the storm hit earlier this month to distribute food and water to the hardest-hit areas. The Our Table Is Yours fundraiser quickly attracted a slew of blue-chip corporate donors, from Bank of America Merrill Lynch to Macy’s to top wholesale and retail food companies.

“Millions of families in New York City struggle to put food on the table daily, and this holiday season, in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, hunger has become an even greater problem,” said Food Bank prexy Margarette Purvis.
