Queen Latifah on board ‘Magnolias’

Lifetime to adapt 1989 female-skewing film

Queen Latifah is on board to star and exec produce Lifetime’s upcoming “Steel Magnolias” telepic.

Project is a TV adaptation of the 1989 femme-centric film that starred Shirley MacLaine, Julia Roberts and Sally Field. For the smallscreen version, Latifah will co-star with Phylicia Rashad, Jill Scott and Adepero Oduye, who recently toplined the Focus Features pic “Pariah.”

From Sony Pictures Television, production is set to begin in April in Atlanta and pic will debut later this year.

In addition to Latifah, other exec producers are Craig Zadan, Neil Meron, Shakim Compere and Shelby Stone. Sally Robinson adapted the script and Kenny Leon will direct.
