Prison drama is based on long-running British series

John Wells is back in biz with NBC, which has ordered a prison drama pilot from his Warner Bros. TV-based shingle.

“Bad Girls” is penned by Nancy Pimental, who has been working on Wells’ Showtime drama “Shameless.” Like “Shameless,” “Bad Girls” is based on a British series that follows a group of women in a federal prison, both inmates and staffers.

Pimental exec produces with Wells and Andrew Stearn. Shed Media is also on board as a producer.

Wells has a long history with the Peacock, as the showrunner of “ER,” “The West Wing” and “Third Watch” during the net’s Must-See TV heyday.
