Jennifer Hudson will be lending her pipes to NBC’s “Smash” with a multi-episode guest star role next season.
Chantoosie has been cast as Veronica Moore, a Broadway star who influences series leads Karen, played by fellow “American Idol” alum Katharine McPhee, and Ivy, played by Megan Hilty. NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt said Hudson’s character would be “someone who reached their Broadway dream but also paid a price for it.”
“This series is a showcase for some of the best musical talent in the business and that’s a fitting description for Jennifer Hudson,” Greenblatt added.
Casting marks a reunion for the thesp with DreamWorks, which produces “Smash” and produced 2006’s “Dreamgirls,” for which Hudson won a supporting actress Oscar.
“First ‘Dreamgirls,’ now ‘Smash,’ ” said “Smash” exec producer Steven Spielberg. “I have no doubt Jennifer will continue to deliver even more inspiration to the audience responsible for giving us a second season on NBC. It’s wonderful to be reunited with her at DreamWorks Television and NBC.”
In addition to “Smash,” Hudson is set to begin production on two features, “Lullaby” and “The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete.”
