HBO climbs Christopher Guest’s ‘Family Tree’

Laffer from NBCU Intl. TV to air on pay cabler, BBC 2

HBO has given a series order to Christopher Guest laffer “Family Tree,” to be produced out of the U.K. by NBCUniversal Intl. TV.

Series, which will run simultaneously on BBC 2, revolves around an aimless 30-year-old who goes on a journey to discover his family roots after inheriting a mysterious box of belongings from his great-aunt. HBO and BBC 2 have ordered eight half-hour segs.

Tree” will star Chris O’Dowd and feature appearances by Guest and his longtime collaborator Jim Piddock. Guest and Piddock co-created the series, and Guest will direct. Project was picked up on the strength of Guest and Piddock’s pilot script; additional casting is about to begin.

Guest, Piddock and Karen Murphy are exec producing for Lucky Giant Prods., NBCU Intl. TV’s comedy development banner.

“Tree” came together as part of NBCU Intl. TV’s push to develop high-profile original programs for export to the U.S. and other markets.

There’s no word yet on a premiere date.

Guest is repped by UTA. O’Dowd’s with UTA, 3 Arts and U.K. percentery Gordon & French.
