Gugino added to ‘Animals’ cast

USA Network's D.C.-based mini set for summer launch

Casting for USA Network miniseries “Political Animals” is ramping up.

Now with Sigourney Weaver officially on top of the call sheet, Carla Gugino is the latest to board the Greg Berlanti project.

Gugino will play newspaper reporter Susan Berg, a journalist who has it in for Weaver’s character — a former first lady and current secretary of state. Also co-starring are “Lone Star” alum James Wolk as Weaver’s son and her chief of staff, and Brittany Ishibashi as Wolk’s fiancee.

The six-episode mini, set for a summer premiere, is from Warner Horizon Television. Exec producers are Berlanti and Laurence Mark. Berlanti wrote and directed the first episode.

USA Network is hoping to turn the mini into a full-fledged dramatic series if there is a strong viewer turnout.

Gugino’s recent TV work includes an episodic turn in FX’s “Justified” and recurring roles in “Calfornication” and “Entourage.”
