Bringing back one of its most popular stars and series, Disney Channel has greenlit a “Wizards of Waverly Place” reunion special for early 2013 starring Selena Gomez, who will also exec produce.
Production will begin in October on the special, which will also feature series cast members Jake T. Austin, Jennifer Stone, Maria Canals-Barrera, David DeLuise and Gregg Sulkin.
The January “Wizards” series finale ranks as cable TV’s most-watched kids program of the year with 11.3 million total viewers and is also first in all of television in children’s demos.
“With the phenomenal ratings of the ‘Wizards’ finale earlier this year, it became clear that fans of the series were not ready to say goodbye to Selena or the rest of the ‘Wizards’ cast,” Disney Channels Worldwide prexy and chief creative officer Gary marsh said. “As such, we’re thrilled that the cast has agreed to reunite to bring their fans one last grand adventure.”
The special comes even as Gomez has begun shedding her Disney image for such projects as Harmony Korine’s racy feature “Spring Breakers.” Vince Cheung, Ben Montanio and Dan Berendsen scripted the special, which Victor Gonzalez will direct for It’s a Laugh Prods.
Gomez, Cheung and Montanio, Dan Cross and David Hoge are the exec producers.
