Fox’s ‘Mindy Project’ adds exec producers

Matt Warburton tapped as showrunner for Universal TV sitcom

Fox comedy “The Mindy Project” has set “Simpsons” alum Matt Warburton as showrunner and exec producer of the Universal TV sitcom.

The comedy starring Mindy Kaling has also bolstered its creative team by recruiting Michael Spiller (“Modern Family”) as an exec producer and director and Linwood Boomer (“Malcolm in the Middle”) as a consulting producer. Chris McKenna (“American Dad”) will serve as co-exec producer.

“Mindy” revolves around a woman who is a successful ob-gyn with a messy personal life. The series is a high priority for Universal TV as it returns to the business of fielding shows for non-NBCUniversal networks.

Warburton has worked on Fox’s “The Simpsons” for more than a decade, most recently as co-exec producer.

“Mindy” is slated to bow in the fall in the Tuesday 9:30 p.m. berth behind “New Girl.”
