Magic Johnson’s cabler Aspire is adding cultural programming blocks to its fall lineup with Laurence Fishburne and Esperanza Spalding as hosts.
Fishburne will introduce a different pic each week on “Groundbreaking Movies” and offer insight into the cast, filmmaking process and the movie’s cultural significance. Series will bow Thursday at 8 p.m. with “Devil in a Blue Dress.” Upcoming films to be broadcast on Aspire under the “Groundbreaking Movies” banner include “Wilma,” “The Wiz” and “The Learning Tree.”
“I could not be more excited to be hosting ‘Groundbreaking Movies’ on Aspire,” Fishburne. said “Each week we welcome our viewers into the Cinema Gypsy Theater, which is designed to create an intimate and warm atmosphere, like sitting in someone’s home screening room.”
“Groundbreaking Music” will be hosted by Spalding, a Grammy-winning jazz musician, and boast performance speshes including “Earth Wind and Fire Live,” “Beyond the Steps: Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater” and “Dorothy Dandridge Singing at Her Best.” Series debuts Friday at 8 p.m.
Aspire recently premiered “Groundbreaking Comedy,” hosted by comedian Jonathan Slocumb.
Cabler was launched by Magic Johnson Enterprises this summer and targets African-American demos.
