‘Danni Lowinski’ heads to Russia, Ukraine

Belgium remake of German series is a hit

BERLIN

German series “Danni Lowinski,” remade as a pilot for CW last year before it passed on the series, is getting another chance at an international redo — this time in Russia and Ukraine.

Ukraine’s Star Media Film has nabbed rights for the Sat.1 dramedy about a feisty hairdresser-turned-lawyer. “Masha in Law” will begin production in May and air on Ukrainian channel STB and Russian broadcaster Domashny.

CBS TV Studios produced the “Danni Lowinski” pilot for CW, penned by Jennie Snyder Urman and starring Amanda Walsh. A Belgian remake fared better, achieving record ratings last month for pubcaster VTM, which has ordered a second season. “Danni Lowinski” won best series at the 2010 German Television Awards and continues to be a ratings winner for Sat.1, which has ordered a fourth season.
