Fall TV Preview 2012: Cable

Spies and period pieces will play heavy on cable this fall, but there’s still room for a traditional sitcom, new millennium “Friends,” and a little reality. Here’s a look at some of what’s coming:

“Save My Son”
TVOne, premiering Sept. 26
Unscripted series profiles the struggles of black families to save their wayward sons through strong role models.

“See Dad Run”
Nick at Nite, Oct. 6
Sitcom features Scott Baio as a famous TV dad who becomes a real stay-at-home father.

“Johnny Cash: Song by Song”
Ovation, Oct. 7
The Man in Black’s life saga, told through six of his hits, includes interviews with his famous colleagues.

“American Horror Story: Asylum”
FX, Oct. 17
The drama that isn’t a drama is reincarnated with a fresh setting, characters and Jessica Lange in a new role.

“Underemployed”
MTV, Oct. 16
Craig Wright’s comedy take on five Chicago friends experiencing post-college economic and social slump struggles.

“Ethel”
HBO, Oct. 18
Rory Kennedy’s candid documentary about her mother, Ethel’s, struggles, including raising 11 children after her husband’s assassination.v

“Hunted”
Cinemax, Oct. 19
“X-Files” scribe Frank Spotnitz penned this eight-episode contemporary drama about a betrayed private intelligence spy (Melissa George).

“The Girl”
HBO, Oct. 20
Dramatic film chronicles Alfred Hitchcock’s obsessive relationship with Tippi Hedren during the filming of “The Birds” and “Marnie.”

“Catfish: The TV Show”
MTV, Nov. 12
Hit documentary “Catfish” goes reality TV with the filmmakers telling the stories of those who fell in love online.
